LEEDing the Way in Historic Sustainability

Designed as a showpiece for community sustainability, the conversion of the former York County Court House into an Administrative Center preserved a historic building while incorporating new “green” features.

JDBE provided integrated engineering solutions for the challenging 128,000 sq. ft. project.  A project goal was to incorporate LEED certification into the final solution.

Sixteen HVAC options were considered, with eight selected to receive detailed life cycle cost analysis.  It was determined that upgrades to the building envelope (insulation and thermal windows) provided the optimal solution to lower installed and operating costs of HVAC equipment.  Abundant natural lighting is combined with dimmable artificial lighting, occupancy sensors, and time-of-day control to further enhance energy efficiency.

Recipient of the Energy & Atmosphere award from the Green Building Association of Central Pennsylvania, the project also received the prestigious Public Works Project of the Year in the historic renovation category from the American Public Works Association as well as an Eyster Energy Efficiency Award from the York County Community Foundation.
