Giving the Cold Shoulder

JDBE has designed several thermal storage systems for Met-Ed, including two installed in existing facilities as part of major renovations. The environmentally-friendly HVAC system uses insulated storage tanks and chillers to produce ice at night (off peak hours), then the ice is melting during the day to provide building cooling.

The York, PA system also features low-temperature, with air cooled to a temperature of 44 to 46 degrees and then circulated throughout the building. Because the air is up to 10 degrees cooler than a convention air conditioning system, the air quantities are less and thus the size of the air handling system is reduced.

A system designed in Reading, PA employs heat recovery via a 30,000 gallon water tank.

The York project involved 40,000 sq. ft. of renovation while the Reading project entailed over 170,000 sq. ft. of new and renovated space, Both facilities received new thermal windows, enhanced insulation, energy efficient lighting, and extensive use of natural lighting.
