Greening a New Gateway Into Town

The Greenway Tech Centre is a showcase project for the community in which it was built. Envisioned as an environmentally friendly, high-tech gateway building, the project involved conversion of a former cigar factory. 

Integrated engineering solutions were provided by JDBE, and the adaptive reuse was designed to obtain silver LEED certification. 

Abundant natural lighting has reduced the lighting power density to a mere 0.7 watts per square foot, compared with the allowable 1.3 watts per square foot.  Spray insulation and low-e glazing windows integrate with an energy-efficient HVAC system to provide a 25% increase in energy efficiency over AHRAE standards.  Occupancy sensors and time of day controls were also incorporated to enhance energy efficiency. 

The end-result has been highly successful.  The project received the Overall Excellence Award from the Green Building Association of Central PA as well as a Silver Award from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania and an Eyster Award for Energy Efficiency from the Green Building Association of Central Pennsylvania.
